Welcome to our slice of paradise! Masterton and the wider Wairarapa region are bursting with things to see, do, and experience. Whether you're a local looking for something new or a visitor exploring for the first time, you'll find everything from charming cafés and boutique shops to stunning walking trails and natural wonders. Take a deep breath, slow down, and soak in the beauty that surrounds you—there’s something here for everyone. I've made a list of some of my favourite "go tos" but there is so much more to discover.
Things To Do
Wairarapa Farmers' Market

We love kicking off the weekend at the Saturday morning market—there’s something special about the relaxed buzz, friendly faces, and local finds. Wander through a variety of stalls featuring fresh produce, handmade goods, and hidden treasures. Don’t forget to grab a coffee from one of the carts and soak it all in—it’s the perfect way to start your Saturday.
The Watermill Bakery

Tucked away towards Mt. Holdsworth, The Watermill Bakery is a true local treasure. With no website and a charming, off-the-grid feel, it's the kind of place you hear about through word of mouth—and once you go, you’ll want to tell everyone.
Here's how it works: give them a call ahead of time to let them know how many wood-fired pizza bases you’ll need. It’s a bring-your-own-toppings (and drinks/snacks) experience, and cash only—so come prepared. On a chilly winter day, there’s nothing better than cozying up in the rustic cabin with the smell of fresh pizza wafting from the oven. It’s simple, wholesome, and one-of-a-kind.

The Screening Room - Cafe & Movie Theatre

The Screening Room is a boutique cinema experience like no other. Intimate and thoughtfully designed, it offers a cozy, upmarket alternative to your typical movie night. Settle into super comfy seats and enjoy the luxury of having food and drinks delivered straight to you during the film—or arrive early and enjoy a full dinner in their stylish restaurant before the show.
While you won’t find popcorn here, the carefully curated menu and unique atmosphere more than make up for it. It’s relaxed, and full of charm—perfect for a date night or a special evening out.
Thursday Night Food Truck Masterton

Thursday nights are all about good food and great company! This one-night-only event brings together a rotating lineup of food trucks, serving up everything from street food classics to unique local flavors. Friends and families gather, the atmosphere is buzzing, and there’s always something new to try. Whether you're craving something sweet, spicy, or smoky off the grill, it’s a fun and relaxed way to spend your evening.
Cycling Tom Bike Hire And Tours & Cafe

Cycle Tom’s is a hub for all things bikes—and more. Whether you need a quick tune-up, some new gear, or you're looking to hire a bike for your next Wairarapa adventure, this is the place to go. But it’s not just for cyclists—Cycle Tom’s has become a local favourite for coffee catch-ups too. With its laid-back vibe and welcoming crew, it’s the kind of spot where bike lovers and coffee lovers can both feel right at home.
Mt Holdsworth - Jumbo Circuit

This is one of our absolute favourite ways to soak in the natural beauty of the region. Whether you're after a short adventure or a multi-day trek, the Tararua Ranges have something for everyone. Take a rewarding walk up to Rocky Lookout for stunning views, or push on to Powell Hut for a real sense of accomplishment. For the truly adventurous, pack your gear and hike hut-to-hut along the range over several days. Whether you spend a couple of hours or a couple of days exploring, the climb is challenging, invigorating, and totally worth it.
